Gabriele Mainetti, nato a Roma il 7 novembre 1976, è un regista, attore, compositore e produttore cinematografico che sta facendo molto parlare di sé.
Dopo il cortometraggio “Tiger Boy”, entrato nella shortlist delle nomination agli Oscar categoria Live Action Short Film, nel 2014 dirige il suo primo lungometraggio “Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot”, presentato in anteprima alla Festa del Cinema di Roma nel 2015, prodotto dalla sua Goon Films e vincitore – tra gli altri riconoscimenti – di 7 David di Donatello, 2 Nastri d’argento, 4 Ciak d’oro e del Globo d’oro.
Il secondo film, “Freaks Out”, ha ottenuto 16 candidature e vinto 6 statuette alla 67ª edizione dei David di Donatello 2022, oltre a 3 Nastri D’Argento.
Uscito sul grande schermo a marzo 2025, il suo terzo film, “La città proibita” ha ricevuto in Italia il Nastro d’Argento e il Globo d’oro per la Migliore Regia e, in Europa, il Grand Prix Nouveau Genre e il Prix du Public all’Étrange Festival di Parigi, oltre al Bronze Award – Best International Feature al Fantasia International Film Festival di Montreal.

Gabriele Mainetti, born in Rome on November 7, 1976, is a director, actor, composer, and film producer who has been making waves in the Italian and international film scene.
After his short film Tiger Boy—which made the shortlist for the Academy Awards in the Live Action Short Film category—Mainetti directed his first feature film, They Call Me Jeeg Robot (2015), presented in preview at the Rome Film Fest. Produced by his own company, Goon Films, the film went on to win numerous awards, including 7 David di Donatello, 2 Nastro d’Argento, 4 Ciak d’Oro, and the Globo d’Oro.
His second feature, Freaks Out, received 16 nominations and won 6 David di Donatello Awards at the 67th edition in 2022, along with 3 Nastro d’Argento.
Released in March 2025, his third film, La città proibita (The Forbidden City), earned the Nastro d’Argento and the Globo d’Oro for Best Director in Italy. Internationally, it received the Grand Prix Nouveau Genre and the Prix du Public at the Étrange Festival in Paris, as well as the Bronze Award – Best International Feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.
This year, the Matera Film Festival will dedicate a retrospective to Gabriele Mainetti, featuring his short films:
